Applies to: All plans (Self-Managed and Managed)
Before you start: Have the domain of the service you want to change to hand, and check that your sites fit the plan you want: see What's included in your plan (features and limits at a glance).
You can move to a bigger or smaller plan at any time, within the same line or between Self-Managed and Managed. Our team makes the change for you on request: there is no self-service plan change in the client area. Upgrading gives you more websites, storage and resources; downgrading reduces them. Your website files, databases, mailboxes and DNS records stay in place during the change.
How to change your plan
- Email billing@maxinodes.com or open a request in our Help Center at support.maxinodes.com.
- Tell us the domain or service and the plan you want.
- Before we make the change, we reply with the amount due for it, or any credit it gives.
- Once you confirm, and pay any invoice for the difference from Billing -> Invoices by card or in cryptocurrency, we change the plan and confirm by reply.
Result: Once the change is made, your new plan and its resource limits apply to your hosting account.
How a plan change is priced
A plan change is prorated from what you actually paid for your current term, not from your plan's renewal price.
- Upgrade: for the time left in your current term, you pay the new plan's regular price for your billing cycle, less the unused part of what you actually paid for your current plan.
- Downgrade: any credit for the time left in your current term is the unused part of what you actually paid, less the smaller plan's regular price for that time.
- No first-term price on a plan change. First-term prices are for new orders only, so they never apply to an upgrade or downgrade. If your current term started at a first-term price, the change is worked out from that discounted amount.
- At your next renewal, the service renews for the same term at the new plan's renewal price.
Prices for every plan are in Billing cycles and how much you save. VAT is not charged at checkout today, so there is no tax line to expect on the invoice.
What happens to your data and resource limits
- Your websites, files and databases stay put. Changing plan does not wipe your hosting account or move your site to a new server.
- Resource limits change to match the new plan. Upgrading raises your storage, website count and database limits; downgrading lowers them.
- Before you downgrade, check you fit inside the smaller plan. If your current usage (number of websites, total disk space including mail, number of databases, or the number and size of your mailboxes) exceeds the new plan's limits, reduce it first to avoid hitting a limit. For example, Self-Managed Lite allows 1 website, 10 GB of storage shared by your site and your mail, 2 databases, and 10 mailboxes of up to 5 GB each. A mailbox that reaches its size limit refuses incoming mail, and the senders get a bounce, until you make room.
- Your mailboxes stay too. The mailboxes included with your plan, and the mail in them, stay where they are. The new plan's mailbox count and maximum mailbox size apply, and mail keeps counting toward the plan's storage.
- DNS and Professional Email are unaffected. Your DNS records stay in the client area DNS manager, and your Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace seats are billed and managed separately from your hosting, so a hosting plan change does not touch them.
Switching between Self-Managed and Managed
Moving from Self-Managed to Managed (which adds 24/7 monitoring, the uptime SLA and daily 30-day backups), or from Managed back to Self-Managed, works the same way: ask us, and the change is priced as described above.
Troubleshooting this task
- I do not see an upgrade option in the client area. That is expected: plan changes are made by our team. Email billing@maxinodes.com or open a request in our Help Center.
- My site broke, or mail stopped arriving, after a downgrade. You may be over the new plan's limits. Free up storage (old mail counts too), remove extra databases or websites, and tell us if you need a hand.
- I cannot pay the invoice for the change. You pay by card or in cryptocurrency. See How to view and pay an invoice.
