Applies to: All plans
Before you start: You need access to your client area at my.maxinodes.com and the hosting service you want to cancel. Before the cancellation date, download any files and databases you want to keep, and copy or move your email: copy it to another mailbox with a mail app over IMAP, or download a full account backup, which includes your mailboxes (see How to download a backup of your site).
You cancel hosting yourself from your client area by submitting a cancellation request on the service. You choose whether it stops at the end of your current term or immediately. This article explains both, what happens to your data, and how refunds work.
Choose your cancellation type
- End of term (recommended): Your hosting stays active until the date you have already paid through, then it is not renewed. You keep using the site and your mailboxes until then and you are not billed again.
- Immediate: Your hosting is suspended within a day of your request: your website goes offline and your mailboxes are locked. Only choose this if you no longer need the service.
How to request cancellation
- Log in to your client area at my.maxinodes.com.
- Go to Services -> My Services.
- Click the hosting service you want to cancel to open it.
- On the service page, choose the Request Cancellation option.
- Pick End of Term or Immediate, add a short reason if asked, and submit the request.
Result: You will see the cancellation request recorded on the service and receive a confirmation email. An End of Term request leaves the service active until your paid-through date; an Immediate request takes effect within a day. Either way, nothing is deleted on that date: see What happens to your data below.
If you cannot find the option or you are unsure which date your term ends, open a request in our Help Center at support.maxinodes.com, or email support@maxinodes.com, and we will confirm it for you.
What happens to your data
- On the cancellation date the service is suspended, not deleted. Your website goes offline, your mailboxes are locked (no logins, no sending), and mail sent to your domain is held for about 4 days and then returned to the senders.
- 14 days later everything is deleted for good: the hosting account, its files, databases and all the mail in your mailboxes. Until then you can ask us to restore the service or to give you a copy. After that it is gone, so export your files and databases and copy or move your email before the cancellation date.
- Your DNS zone stays with us — it is not deleted when the service ends. That is deliberate: it means the records you added, including the MX records your email depends on, are not lost if you cancel by mistake, or if you keep the domain with us and move the hosting elsewhere. If you are moving your email elsewhere, point the MX record at your new provider before the cancellation date: while it still points to
mx.maxinodes.com, mail sent to your domain comes to us, and once the service is suspended it is held and then returned to the senders. If you would rather we removed the zone, open a request at support.maxinodes.com or email support@maxinodes.com, and we will delete the zone for you. - Backups (JetBackup to Backblaze B2) are tied to the live service. Once the account is deleted, do not rely on being able to restore from them — export everything you need first.
- Your domain is separate from hosting. Cancelling hosting does not cancel a domain you registered with us, and domain registrations and renewals are generally non-refundable once registered. The one exception: if automatic payment has already charged a domain renewal and you cancel that renewal before the invoice's due date, we refund it in full.
- The mailboxes included with your plan are on the hosting server, so they are suspended and then deleted with the account, including all their mail.
- Your Professional Email (Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace) is a separate product. Its mailboxes live in your own Microsoft or Google tenant, not on the hosting server, so cancelling hosting does not delete them. Cancel those seats separately if you no longer need them.
Refunds and the money-back guarantee
- Every plan — Self-Managed and Managed — is eligible for the 30-day money-back guarantee, on a first-time, eligible plan and on your initial order only. If you cancel a new plan within 30 days of that order, contact us and we will refund what you paid for the plan's first term, less the regular price of a free first-year domain if one came with the plan (the domain stays registered to you for the rest of its first year).
- Renewals are not covered. After the 30-day window — and on every later term — the normal approach is an End of Term cancellation so you are simply not billed again; there is nothing further to refund. A renewal is charged at the plan's renewal price, and we email you at least 30 days before any renewal that costs more than your last payment. If automatic payment has already charged a renewal and you cancel before the invoice's due date, we refund that renewal in full.
- Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace subscriptions we have bought on your behalf are non-refundable once provisioned, as are other third-party items, licences and one-off charges bought through us.
- Approved refunds are processed within approximately 14 days. VAT is not currently charged at checkout, so no VAT is involved in any refund.
- If you paid by card or another method on our payment page, the refund goes back to the same means of payment. If you paid in cryptocurrency, a refund is arranged with you rather than pushed back down the same rails: we agree the euro amount and the wallet address to send it to, and the amount of cryptocurrency you receive back may not match what you sent, because rates move. See What payment methods can I use?.
To claim the 30-day money-back guarantee, email billing@maxinodes.com within the 30 days — or open a request in our Help Center at support.maxinodes.com — and tell us the service and the date you ordered.
Troubleshooting this task
- No Request Cancellation option: Make sure you opened the specific hosting service under Services -> My Services, not the domain or an add-on. If it is still missing, open a request at support.maxinodes.com.
- You changed your mind: Before the cancellation date, open a request at support.maxinodes.com and ask us to withdraw it. For 14 days after that date you can still ask us to restore the service; after that, the account and its mail are gone.
- You only want a smaller plan, not to leave: You do not need to cancel — see How to upgrade or downgrade your plan instead.
