This article shows what is backed up and how long we keep each backup on every Self-Managed and Managed plan. We run JetBackup writing to Backblaze B2 object storage. Use it to restore a single file, a database, or a whole account from a chosen daily snapshot.
What is backed up
A backup snapshot covers your cPanel hosting account: your website files, your MySQL databases, your settings, and your cron jobs. Backups run daily on every plan (Self-Managed Lite keeps a weekly snapshot — see the table).
A few things are not in these snapshots, because they do not live on the hosting server:
- Email. Mailboxes are on resold Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, not on our server, so they are backed up by that provider, not by us. See How email works at Maxinodes.
- DNS records. Your DNS is managed by us, on our own nameservers, and edited in your client area, not in cPanel, so it is held there independently of these snapshots. See How to manage DNS records in your client area.
- Your domain registration. Renewals and contacts are managed in your client area.
Retention by plan
| Plan | Line | Backup frequency | How long kept | Where stored |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-Managed Lite | Self-Managed | Weekly | Most recent weekly snapshot | Backblaze B2 |
| Self-Managed Plus | Self-Managed | Daily | 7 days | Backblaze B2 |
| Self-Managed Pro | Self-Managed | Daily | 14 days | Backblaze B2 |
| Starter | Managed | Daily | 30 days, off-site | Backblaze B2 |
| Growth | Managed | Daily | 30 days, off-site | Backblaze B2 |
| Business | Managed | Daily | 30 days, off-site | Backblaze B2 |
| Enterprise | Managed | Daily | 30 days, off-site | Backblaze B2 |
Result: Older snapshots roll off automatically once they pass the retention window for your plan. To keep something longer, download it (see below).
Self-Managed vs Managed at a glance
- Self-Managed plans are self-restore: you run restores yourself from JetBackup inside cPanel. Retention is weekly (Lite), 7 days (Plus) or 14 days (Pro).
- Managed plans get daily, 30-day, off-site backups as standard. Off-site means your backup copies are held by a separate provider, inside the EU, on infrastructure independent of the servers your site runs on — so an incident affecting our hosting platform does not affect your backups. Our team can also run restores for you.
Want longer retention on a Self-Managed plan?
Two options:
- Add the Managed Backups add-on for €5/mo to a Self-Managed account. It upgrades you to managed off-site backups kept for 30 days. See The Managed Backups add-on.
- Move to a Managed plan, which includes 30-day off-site backups. See Self-Managed vs Managed hosting.
Keep your own backups too
We recommend you also keep an independent copy of anything you cannot afford to lose. You can generate and download a full backup of your account at any time — see How to download a backup of your site.
