Maxinodes backs up your hosting account automatically using JetBackup, which writes snapshots to Backblaze B2 object storage. You don't need to set anything up — backups run on a schedule from the day your account is created. This article explains what gets backed up, how long copies are kept on each plan, and what you can restore yourself.
What gets backed up
Each snapshot covers your full cPanel account: your website files, your MySQL databases, and your account configuration (such as cron jobs, FTP accounts and SSL certificates).
Email is the one thing not covered by these backups. Maxinodes does not host mailboxes on the hosting server — Professional Email is resold Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, and your messages live in that provider's cloud. Those mailboxes have their own retention and recovery, managed in the Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace admin console, not by JetBackup.
How often backups run, and how long they're kept
The backup schedule and how far back you can restore depend on your product line and plan.
| Plan | Backup frequency | Retention | Where stored |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-Managed Lite | Weekly | Latest weekly snapshot | Backblaze B2 |
| Self-Managed Plus | Daily | 7 days | Backblaze B2 |
| Self-Managed Pro | Daily | 14 days | Backblaze B2 |
| Managed (all plans) | Daily | 30 days, off-site | Backblaze B2 |
"Off-site" on Managed means your backup copies are held by a separate provider, inside the EU, on infrastructure independent of the servers your site runs on — so a problem affecting our hosting platform doesn't take your backups with it.
For a fuller per-plan breakdown, see Backup retention by plan.
What you can restore yourself (Self-Managed)
On Self-Managed plans, you can restore from a snapshot yourself, directly in cPanel. Open the JetBackup tool in cPanel (the option labelled JetBackup or Backups, usually under the Files section), choose a snapshot, and restore one of the following:
- A single file or folder
- A single database
- Your full account / website
See the step-by-step guides: Restore a file or folder, Restore a database, and Restore a full account or website.
Result: You can roll a file, a database, or your whole site back to how it looked on a chosen day, within your plan's retention window.
How Managed backups are handled
On Managed plans, restores are part of the service. Daily off-site snapshots are kept for 30 days, and our team carries out restores for you — just contact support and tell us what to recover and roughly when it was last correct.
If you're on Self-Managed and want managed-style protection, the Managed Backups add-on (€5/mo) upgrades a Self-Managed account to the same managed, off-site, 30-day backups. See The Managed Backups add-on.
Always keep your own backups too
Platform backups are a safety net, not a substitute for your own copies. We strongly recommend you also keep an independent backup outside Maxinodes, especially before any major change such as a theme switch, a plugin update or a site migration.
You can generate and download a full backup of your account at any time — see Download a backup of your site. Store it somewhere separate (your computer or your own cloud storage). For WordPress specifically, see Back up and restore WordPress.
